In September 2000, the state of California passes the 'Slavery Era Insurance Policies Act' that requires insurance companies to report of any records pertaining to slaveholder insurance policies issued by any predecessor corporation during the slavery era. A reporting commission is set up to register these records and note the names of any slaveholders and enslaved persons. The final section notes that 'Descendants of slaves, whose ancestors were defined as private property, dehumanized, divided from their families, forced to perform labor without appropriate compensation or benefits, and whose ancestors' owners were compensated for damages by insurers, are entitled to full disclosure'.
