From 2 to 6 October 2002, a follow-up conference to the UN World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (UNWCAR) is held in Barbados, entitled the 'Afrikans and Afrikan Descendants World Conference Against Racism'. Controversies arise at this conference due to the exclusion of non-black participants, resulting in the issuing of a statement from the Secretariat for and on behalf of the International Alliance Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (IAAR) on 11 October 2002 expressing regret for this action and stating that it went against the purposes of the conference. Importantly, this conference leads to the publication of ‘The Bridgetown Protocol’ (2003) and also sees the establishment of the Global Afrikan Congress (GAC), an international umbrella organization organized for and by Afrikans and people of Afrikan descent.
