In March 2000, Aetna issues a formal apology for its involvement in selling insurance policies to enslavers and sets up a $5 million college scholarship programme for African-American students from Louisana to atone for its past actions. The apology was prompted by an inquiry from activist Deadria Farmer-Paellmann, who contacted Aetna with a view to seeking an official apology and reparations.
