On 10 May 2006, France organizes its first National Day to Commemorate Slavery, the Slave Trade and their Abolitions.The date is chosen by the Comité pour la mémoire de l'esclavage in remembrance of the passing of the (first) Taubira law recognizing 'slavery and the slave trade as a crime against humanity'. The president of the Republic, Jacques Chirac, gives a speech to inaugurate this national day in the Jardin du Luxembourg.
