2002
New York, USA
On 26 March 2002, the first class-action lawsuit is filed to seek compensation from US insurance companies who previously profited from the enslavement of African peoples. The claim is made against FleetBoston Financial Corporation, Aetna and CSX Corporation. A further eight lawsuits are filed in 2002, all of which are consolidated into one class-action lawsuit in October of the same year. The case is dismissed in 2004, amended, resubmitted and dismissed again in 2005 on the basis of the statute of limitations, while the Supreme Court refuses to hear the appeal in October 2007.
