The Sixth Pan-African Congress takes place in June 1974 within the political context of independence and sees delegates affirming their commitment to the revolutions taking place across the African continent, notably in the wake of the western powers' attempts to crush 'African socialism' (Nyerere) 'through sponsored coups and military assassinations' (Andrews, 2015).Under the threat of neo-colonialism, pan-Africanist thinking is forced 'into a third stage of development that emphasizes anti-imperialism, stresses the necessity for class struggle as well as the struggle for national liberation, foresees the need for a form of socialism based on mass participation, and places Africa within the context of a developing world-wide revolutionary process' (The Black Scholar, 1974).
