The TransAfrica Forum is inaugurated on 1 July 1977 under the presidency of Randall Robinson, an African-American lawyer, author and activist, as a non-profit organization dedicated to creating 'a well-informed U.S. audience that makes its voice heard in the foreign policy arena to ensure that humanitarian and economic policies support people’s human rights while strengthening their self-determination and improving their quality of life' (TransAfrica Forum). In particular, it will go on to fight against the apartheid regime in South Africa and to work to reduce dependence on aid, while promoting sustainable and enviromentally-focused development. Its work will also include making the case for Black reparations by hosting a discussion on this matter in January 2000.
