Reparations are important because they provide an alternative vision of what international development could be if these issues were properly taken into account. Although originally defined in terms of active amends to repair a wrong, debates around reparations give us new ways of understanding contemporary problems. We have been misdiagnosing problems of inequality by putting them down to a lack of access among people living in poverty to the wider economic system. Reparations is a new way of examining global inequality.
